Using money for shopping

This is the second of two lesson plans belonging to our financial literacy content for ages 5-7 designed to teach children about money. There is a mix of resources including an animation, role play materials and activity book which align to the Young Money Financial Education Planning Framework and have been awarded the Young Money Quality Mark.

Before delivering this lesson, make sure to deliver the Counting money lesson which introduces Anika and her vegetable patch project and focuses on the basics of counting money and budgeting.

The Using money for shopping lesson helps pupils develop a basic understanding of how to use physical and digital money to buy items as they practise this through role play.

Learning lesson outcomes

By the end of the lesson pupils will be able to:

• Understand the value of money and the importance of planning in budgeting
• Demonstrate budgeting skills
• Understand how to use cash to make purchases
• Understand that card payment is a way of paying that doesn’t involve cash

They also develop pupils’ core transferable skills such as problem solving and communication.
