This lesson is designed to help you support students who are leaving school and looking to transition into employment, further or higher education.

The world of work is changing at pace, influenced by automation, AI and ambitions for net-zero which is accelerating the growing need to equip students with the core transferable skills for the workplace. 

The activities and discussion points in this lesson aim to serve as practical tools to help empower students as they explore different ways to plan.  The three different activities in this lesson are: 

  • Exploring opportunities.
  • Paving the way.
  • Independent learning.

Each activity has an interactive supporting worksheet for students to fill out alongside the delivery of the lesson.  Signposting to additional helpful links with further advice, as well as guidance at the end of the lesson on the topics explored. 

Lesson learning outcomes

  • Understand ‘emerging’ and ‘growth sectors’ when they consider their possible routes into work or further education.
  • Begin preparing for their transition out of education and how to make the first steps in preparation for employment.
  • Feel confident in their ability to independently research different career routes and reflect on how they can best prepare for the roles they discover.
